DENTISTRY

It is well established that poor dental health puts our pets at risk for heart disease, kidney disease, diabetes and other health issues. While good preventive tooth brushing will be sufficient to keep some pets’ mouths healthy, others require a more proactive approach.

In our pet dentistry practice at San Anselmo Animal Hospital, we review each animal’s individual needs and develop a prevention and treatment plan to fit their needs. Regular anesthetic teeth cleanings for both dogs and cats allow us to clean below the gum line and enable us to detect and treat gingivitis and endodontic and periodontal disease.

In the event that we discover teeth that need to be removed, we are experienced at performing extractions, and we provide multi-modal pain management to ensure that your pet is comfortable post-operatively.

ROUTINE EXAMS

Your pet needs regular health check-ups too! Often times a routine visit to our offices with one of our veterinarians can result in a simple treatment for a health problem that would have developed into something more serious for your dog or cat if not detected early.

Regular check-ups for your pet save you money and time, and help to avoid serious health problems for your pet. We recommend annual exams for all pets with routine blood work to help screen for early signs of disease. For senior pets, bi-annual exams are key to identifying developing disease early. We want to keep your dog or cat happy and healthy for long life. An ounce of prevention is most certainly worth a pound of cure!

INTERNAL MEDICINE

Internal medicine is a broad category that encompasses all of your pet’s body’s systems. While some of our pets’ illnesses may seem straightforward, chronic problems are often a sign that there is underlying disease, which will likely become severe if not identified and treated appropriately.

Our veterinarians have extensive training that enables them to recognize signs of serious disease early and provide diagnostics that get answers. We maintain excellent relationships with local and national experts in a variety of veterinary medicine fields and consult with these professionals regularly. We are able to provide most diagnostic procedures on-site. Our veterinarians continuously monitor those pets that require referral. We work as a team, combining our knowledge of your pet's history with the experts' opinion.

DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING

At San Anselmo Animal Hospital we use digital radiographs and ultrasound to aid our diagnostic work up of your pet. We work with radiologists around the country who consult on X-ray interpretation, as well as local experts who perform both abdominal and cardiac ultrasounds in our clinic.

These services allow us to provide the same diagnostic imaging services for your dog or cat you would receive at an advanced care facility - in our convenient, local location. Your pet will always be handled with the greatest of care by our staff of professional technicians and veterinarians. You can take comfort in knowing that your pet will be surrounded by people you know and trust.

SURGERY

At San Anselmo Animal Hospital we have a fully-equipped surgical suite with up-to-date and continuously maintained monitoring and temperature controlling devices. We actively monitor our patients during anesthetic procedures using multi-modal veterinary monitors, and we regulate your pet's body temperature post-surgery using Bair Hugger heating blankets. We routinely perform pet surgery procedures, such as spays, neuters, mass removals, cystotomies, and foreign body removal. In addition to in-house surgical capabilities, we frequently call on Dr. Rick Schwach to perform surgeries, such as orthopedic, abdominal and oncological surgeries, including TPLOs, brachiocephalic airway correction, lateral sutures, bone plating, femoral head excisions, fracture repairs and surgical treatment of laryngeal paralysis. Both before and after surgery, we provide pain management for your dog or cat ranging from local blocks that numb the surgical site to continuous rate infusions of strong pain medications. Our pain management strategies are always a top priority to alleviate any discomfort associated with a surgical procedure for your pet.

COLD LASER THERAPY

SAAH has a Grade IV cold laser unit that stimulates cellular repair and increases blood flow to damaged tissues. By reducing inflammation in this way, the laser is a great tool for promoting healing and helping to minimize the pain of many common conditions for dogs and cats, such as sprains, muscle strains and arthritis.

HEALTH CERTIFICATES

Whether traveling domestic or international, a Health Certificate is often required by airlines, border authorities, or other travel agencies. Our experienced veterinarians are qualified to provide comprehensive health examinations and issue the necessary documentation to certify your pet's fitness for travel. Preparing for your pet's travel can be difficult and time consuming depending on the travel destination so please plan at least 2 months in advance for domestic travel and 4 months in advance for international travel.

Domestic Travel (Continental 48 States)

  • If traveling by car, make sure you carry a copy of your pet's current Rabies and Vaccines Certificate.

  • If traveling by airline, you need to check with the individual airline you will be flying. Each airline has their own requirements, some may require a health certificate, letter of acclimation and or rabies certificate

  • Check USDA website for individual state requirements for pets travel.

Domestic Travel (Hawaii)

  • Hawaii requires a Rabies Titer prior to travel. This test can only be run through the Kansas State Rabies Laboratory and can take 6 to 8 weeks turnaround from the time of your pet's blood draw. This test can therefore impede your traveling plans, so please keep this in mind when booking your appointment and travel plans.

  • For more information on bringing your pet to Hawaii please visit the website.

International Travel

  • Each country has their own regulations on pet import, some are stricter than others. It is best to check with the import country's embassy and the USDA to research the import requirements

  • When you schedule your appointment, please let us know where and when you’re planning to travel, so we can properly address your needs.

Special Notice

San Anselmo Animal Hospital is NOT responsible for monitoring changes in pet travel regulations or ensuring that veterinary services, transportation, or any other arrangements are made in accordance with your requirements for travel. It is your responsibility to ensure that your pet has met all the requirements of your destination.

 WHAT OTHERS SAY

“Dr. Anderson has saved my dog’s life! I adopted Winston as a rescue Boxer who turned out to be a special needs dog. Dr. Anderson has treated him for all his issues and has coordinated treatment with multiple other specialists. She cared for him as though he was her own dog and has gained his trust to the point that I am not sure whether he loves her or me more!”
